OSSO VR Raises $27 million to Turn Surgery into a Video Game, TechCrunch Reports

OSSO VR, San-Francisco based virtual reality medical training provider, has raised $27 million in Series B funding led by GSR Ventures with additional participation from SignalFire and Kaiser Permanente Ventures, among others, according to TechCrunch.  Osso VR has created a virtual reality solution that allows surgeons and medical students to interact with medical devices in 3D space, practicing surgeries over and over on a virtual cadaver. The company wants to bring video games’ multiplayer mode into the virtual OR, allowing surgeons and medical assistants to collaborate in real-time, TechCrunch reports.  Osso VR’s solution has facilitated nearly 30,000 training sessions, providing an average of 22,000 minutes of training a month, according to VRWorldTech.  Osso VR’s platform runs on Facebook’s Oculus Quest 2 headset through the company’s Oculus for Business program. Company’s clients include Johnson & Johnson, Stryker, and Smith & Nephew, as well as Brown University, Hospital for Special Surgery, Johns Hopkins University, and Rush University. “We have built a once-in-a-lifetime team, bringing together experts from healthcare, technology, movies and gaming to pursue our mission: improve patient outcomes, accelerate the adoption of more-effective surgical technologies and democratise access to education,” Justin Barad MD, chief executive officer and co-founder of Osso VR, told VRWorldTech.

TRIPP, a research-based XR wellness platform, raised $11 million in Series A funding, led by Vine Ventures and Mayfield with participation from Integrated, among others. This round brings TRIPP’s total funding to $15 million since the company’s inception in 2018. TRIPP’s platform leverages algorithms to create unique 2D and 3D worlds that promote emotional wellbeing and transformative states through the use of psychedelic visuals and targeted sounds. The startup says users can alleviate stress with sessions as short as eight minutes. The startup plans to use the funds to grow its team and user base, and innovate more in delivering personalized TRIPP experiences, Nanea Reeves, CEO and Co-Founder of TRIPP, wrote in a blog post.  “If this last year has taught us anything, it’s that prioritizing our mental and emotional wellbeing is crucial,” Reeves wrote in the blog. “We are especially excited to use this new infusion of capital to expand our reach to new platforms and help more people.”  TRIPP is being studied in several clinical trials for substance use disorder, anxiety reduction, pain management, depression, and improving quality of life during cancer treatment, according to Reeves.  The TRIPP VR catalog is available on both the Oculus and PlayStation VR headsets with subscriptions starting at $4.99 per month. TRIPP says it has powered over 2 million sessions.
