Wellbeing and Generative AI

Wellbeing and Generative AI

If you’ve lived long enough, you know when you see something that represents a seismic shift.

An A.D. / B.C. cultural moment, an “internet” type thing…

Generative AI is this.

ChatGPT, MidJourney, StableDiffusion etc.

Pay close attention. Nothing after this is the same.

Right now the dominant conversation on GenAI is around:

  • Is it violating copyright or not? (probably)
  • Is it accurate or not? (sometimes)
  • Will it eliminate artists? (commercial graphic artists – many, the expression of the human soul – solid no)
  • Should (could) it be banned from schools or not? (heh, good luck)
  • Should (could) it be watermarked when used or not? (good idea)
  • Are there HUGE ethical considerations that must be navigated? (YES. YES. YES.)
  • Will there be AI regulatory action that will include GenAI? (most likely)

Wherever you land on the above, what is unarguable is that GenAI is here to stay.

And personally, I’m excited.

Everything new and powerful has issues.

Have a point of view? Then build something with GenAI that properly expresses your views on how things should/could be.

AI is exponential. You can build something now MAS vs. SAS (model as a service vs. software as a service) that you couldn’t afford just a year ago.

Build.

Your actions will shape the space more than complaints.

My question is, how do we leverage GenAI to support human mental, emotional, and social health and happiness?

For me:

  • For Empowerment. I made a New Years message in 20 minutes total that allowed me to express my creativity far beyond my artistic or video editing skills.

I feel empowered.

  • Prompt building for Human2Human comms. I think quality prompt building, where you must say what you want and how you want it to feel, will train humans to say what they want and how they feel to other humans. This is a second-order effect from using the tech. I have been encouraging builders to keep this in as a way to allow GenAI to have prosocial side effects.
  • For Storytelling. The speed that GenAI renders allows it to be used to craft a story. I use MidJourney on business calls to co-create an image with the person I’m meeting. We prompt-build together and I send it to them as a token of our joint creativity and expression.

What are the experiments that you can run?

We are builders and I encourage you to start to play and build — your efforts could help shape how humanity addresses the open questions above.

Love,
Nichol

P.S. It will never be easier, cheaper, with more wide open lanes than RIGHT NOW.

    ‘GenAI’ indeed! – love it!:

    “Then something happened…..

Our convoluted language became even more ciphered in a world that so deifies technology as to strip out fundamental context clues in deference to technology itself – sacrificing communication quality in favor of convenience, commerce, and sensation. Machines were created that talked to people, followed by machines that could comprehend language. Before long, original impressions – already clouded by the jumble of language – were scrambled further by the filter of machines – people talking to machines that talk to other machines that talk to people, or sometimes then other machines that track our business and do tasks for us. Eventually the machines would come to direct our travel, pull at our fingers, formulate our thoughts, and replace our words in a deluded notion of ‘progress’1. By the 21st century, children are begotten by production, introduced to their environment through machines, and begin their lives within virtual worlds via lifeless devices that they feel impotent and groundless to be without. Virtual worlds begin to displace authenticity, definitions dissolve, and fabrications shout down actualities.

    Something is happening…..”
